Defensive Contributions in FPL: How to Think About DEFCON

A practical explanation of defensive contribution points and how to use DEFCON-style data when comparing defenders and midfielders.

FPL Peek approach: This guide explains the decision process behind the tools on this site. It is educational analysis, not a guarantee of future FPL points.

Why defensive contributions matter

Defensive contribution scoring gives Fantasy managers another reason to value players whose influence is not captured by goals, assists or clean sheets. It can raise the floor of centre-backs, defensive midfielders and other players who repeatedly win possession or complete defensive actions.

That changes squad building. A defender no longer has to rely only on a clean sheet or attacking return to be interesting, and a midfielder can offer useful points even when he plays deeper than a traditional FPL attacker.

Think in thresholds, not highlights

A single tackle or clearance is not the point. What matters is whether a player consistently accumulates enough qualifying actions across full matches. That makes role and minutes critical. A centre-back who plays 90 minutes every week has more time to build contribution volume than a rotation-risk full-back.

For this reason, raw season totals should be converted into a per-start or per-90 view when possible. Then check how often the player has actually crossed the scoring threshold rather than only looking at average actions.

Game state changes the opportunity

Defensive actions are partly opponent- and game-state-dependent. A team defending a lead may create more clearances and blocks. A possession-dominant favourite may allow fewer defensive events. That means a difficult fixture is not automatically bad for contribution potential, even though it may be worse for clean-sheet probability.

This is why combining FDR with defensive contribution data is more useful than using either one alone.

What DEFCON Tracker should tell you

A useful DEFCON view should answer three questions: who is repeatedly close to or above the contribution threshold, how stable are their minutes, and what kind of fixtures create those actions. A leaderboard without context can encourage chasing one unusual match.

FPL Peek’s DEFCON Tracker is best used as a screening tool. Identify consistent names, then open the player’s fixtures and compare price, ownership, clean-sheet route and attacking upside before transferring them in.

When defensive contributions are most valuable

They are particularly useful when two players have similar price and minutes but different point floors. A contribution-heavy defender can remain involved in a 1–1 or 2–1 result where a clean-sheet-only pick loses most of his expected return.

They can also help explain why certain players repeatedly outperform a simple model based only on goals, assists and clean sheets.
