How to Plan an FPL Wildcard Without Chasing Last Week

Build a Wildcard around structure, minutes, fixtures and captaincy rather than simply buying the previous Gameweek’s scorers.

Decision principle: Use the metric to understand a trade-off. No single statistic can guarantee future FPL points.

Define what the Wildcard must fix

Write down the structural problems before building the draft: too many rotation risks, weak captaincy, poor fixture concentration, injured players or an awkward price structure.

Without this list, a Wildcard can become a collection of whichever players scored last weekend.

Choose a planning horizon

A Wildcard is permanent, so evaluate several Gameweeks rather than one deadline. The exact horizon depends on upcoming fixture swings and when you expect to use another chip.

Do not demand that every player has five perfect fixtures. A good squad mixes short-term upside with longer-term stability.

Build the captaincy spine first

Premium players often matter most when they become captain options. Identify the Gameweeks where you want strong armband choices, then build the rest of the budget around that spine.

This can be more efficient than selecting fifteen individually attractive players and discovering later that captaincy is weak.

Balance starters and bench

Your bench needs enough minutes to cover surprise absences, but too much money outside the XI can reduce upside. The right balance changes if a Bench Boost is planned soon.

Prefer bench players who are cheap, start regularly and rotate sensibly with your weaker starters.

Stress-test the draft

Ask what happens if one premium is injured, a popular cheap player loses his place or a planned transfer is delayed. A strong Wildcard draft leaves multiple escape routes.

Use Planner to move the squad forward several Gameweeks before pressing the real Wildcard button.
